Interview #1: January 17th - Dr. Shirley Sahrmann discusses the principles behind Movement System Impairment Syndromes including defining the movement system and why it is so important, how she classifies the syndromes, accessory motion hypermobility, and more. Shirley Sahrmann, PT, PhD, FAPTA

Dr Sahrmann is an associate professor of physical therapy and neurology at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis Missouri. She received her doctorate in neurobiology from Washington University School of Medicine. Dr Sahrmann is director of the Movement Science Program. She has received Washington University's Outstanding Faculty Award. She is a Catherine Worthington Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association and is a recipient of the Association's Lucy Blair Service Award and the Marian Williams Research Award. She has served on the APTA's Board of Directors, many committees, task forces, and as President of the Missouri Physical Therapy Association.

Dr Sahrmann, in addition to her numerous national presentations, has been a keynote speaker at the World Confederation of Physical Therapy the Biennial Manipulative Physiotherapist Conference and the Australian and New Zealand annual conferences. Her research interests are control of movement, factors affecting tone, and the classification of patients with movement dysfunction from neurological lesions and with mechanically induced pain syndromes. She maintains an active practice, specializing primarily in patients with musculoskeletal pain syndromes..

Calvin Dietz M.Ed., CSCS

Cal Dietz has been the Head Olympic Strength and Conditioning coach for numerous sports at the University of Minnesota since 2000. Since Dietz's return to Minnesota he has developed the Strength and Conditioning Programs and over seen the daily progress in Men's Hockey, Men's Basketball, Women's Hockey, Men's Golf, Men's Swimming, Track and Field, Baseball and Wrestling.

Also, during his time at the university help founded and chairs the Sport Biomechanics Interest Group with its purpose to explore the physiological and biomechanical aspects of advanced human performance encompassing the various aspects of kinesiology, biomechanics, neuro-mechanics and physics. Dietz is also a member of the Gender Equity Committee at the University of Minnesota and currently represents the University as a member of the Big Ten committee to develop performance enhancing policy for anabolic and ergogenic aids.

Prior to returning to Minnesota, Dietz was the strength coordinator at The University of Findlay, overseeing 26 men's and women's sports, in addition to coordinating the university's fitness center, coaching the offensive line with the football program and teaching strength and conditioning classes.

The Shelby, Ohio, native earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from the Findlay in 1996 and his master's degree from Minnesota in kinesiology in May, 2000. During his athletic career at Findlay, Dietz won three National team championships, two in football and one in wrestling. He was a two-time All-American in Football and won the NAIA National Duals MVP in wrestling.

Interview #3: Jan. 31st - Charlie Weingroff and Bill Hartman discussing Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization and the Postural Restoration Institute methodologies. We're constantly asked about both systems here, so I wanted Charlie and Bill to expand a bit on the foundational principles of both systems, how their views of the 'core' have changed or been solidified, how they've implemented the systems into practice, recommendations for courses, and more..

Charlie Weingroff DPT, ATC, CSCS

Charlie is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He was most recently the Director of Physical Performance and Resiliency and Lead Physical Therapist for the United States Marines Corps Special Operations Command in Camp Lejeune, NC. He is also Director of Clinical Education for the Vibraflex Whole-Body Vibration and Andante Medical, the makers of the SmartStep, mobile force plate. He graduated from Ursinus College with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 1996, and went on to earn an MSPT in 1999 and DPT in 2010 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Prior to returning to his home state of New Jersey in the Fall of 2006 after 12 seasons of professional basketball, he was the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach and Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA. Among the highlights of his tenure in Philadelphia was being part of the medical staff that ranked 1st in the NBA in Player Missed Games in the 2005-06 season.

Through rehabbing patients, he subscribes to a movement-based approach popularized by the works of Dr. Vladimir Janda, Dr. Shirley Sahrmann, Dr. Stuart McGill, Pavel Kolar, Mike Boyle, and Gray Cook. In training athletes and clients, he champions the principles of the Functional Movement Screen and sound, evidence-based training principles. Some of the methodologies Charlie is formally trained in include DNS, ART, Dry Needling, Graston, FMS/SFMA, and the RKC.

Aside from working with patients, athletes and clients, he is also under the bar himself. In 2007, he achieved AAPF Elite status in the 220 weight class with a total of 1915 pounds. His best powerlifting competition total is 800 squat, 510 bench press and 605 deadlift.

Bill Hartman PT, CSCS

Bill Hartman is co-owner of Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training. He has been a physical therapist and sports performance coach in Indianapolis, IN for over 17 years. Bill graduated with distinction from Purdue University in 1988 with a degree in Movement and Sports Science and received his degree in Physical Therapy from the Indiana University Physical Therapy Program.

As a physical therapist, Bill has worked in a variety of settings with a specialization in orthopedics and sports medicine. Bill has received advanced training in treatment of spinal disorders to include spinal mobilization, treatment of lumbo-pelvic disorders, shoulder rehabilitation, knee rehabilitation, core conditioning, and treatment of soft-tissue disorders. Bill is also an Active Release Techniques Practitioner with credentials to treat upper extremity, lower extremity, and spinal disorders.

Bill holds certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and with USA Weightlifting as a Sports Performance Coach. Bill also sits on the Board of Directors of the International Youth Conditioning Association.

Bill has been featured in national golf publications such as Golf World, Golf Week, and Golf Magazine. He was also a columnist and a member of the advisory board for Men's Fitness Magazine and is currently a contributing writer for Men's Health Magazine.

Interview #4: Feb. 7th - Pavel Tsatsouline will get in-depth talking about the unique advantages of the kettlebell to training and even rehab, hot topics in rehab and performance such as breathing, grip strength, flexibility, and unilateral training. Pavel Tsatsouline

Pavel Tsatsouline, Master of Sports, is a former Soviet Special Forces physical training instructor who has been called "the modern king of kettlebells" for starting the Russian kettlebell revolution in the West.

In 1998 Pavel introduced the ancient Russian strength and conditioning tool to the American public in his subversive article, Vodka, Pickle Juice, Kettlebell Lifting, and Other Russian Pastimes. The article was published by MILO, a magazine for tough hombres who bend steel and lift rocks. When Pavel started getting mail from guys with busted noses, cauliflower ears, scars, or at least Hell's Angels tattoos his publisher took notice.

In 2001 Dragon Door published Pavel's groundbreaking book The Russian Kettlebell Challenge and forged the first US made Russian style cast iron kettlebell. RKC™, the first kettlebell instructor course course on American soil, kicked off.

Several years later Dragon Door published Pavel's book Enter the Kettlebell! which became the golden standard in kettlebell instruction. It was followed by Return of the Kettlebell which introduced the most advanced Russian strength and muscle building techniques.

Pavel is a subject matter expert to the US Marine Corps, the US Secret Service, and the US Navy SEALs. A kettlebell in his fist, he was voted the 'Hot Trainer' by Rolling Stone and appeared in media ranging from Pravda to Fox News. Dr. Randall Strossen, one of the most respected names in the strength world, stated, "In our eyes, Pavel Tsatsouline will always reign as the modern king of kettlebells since it was he who popularized them to the point where you could almost found a country filled with his converts…"

Interview #5: Feb. 14th - Patrick Ward is a great manual therapist and strength coach, and brings a unique perspective to the table. Patrick will discuss the existing and new research coming out on some of the various soft tissue methods, the importance of the fascial system to force transfer through the body, the importance of soft tissue work to recovery and also to 'wake up' the CNS prior to training, and more...

Patrick Ward MS, CSCS, LMT

In 2006 Patrick created Optimum Sports Performance LLC and opened his training facility in the summer of 2009 in Tempe, AZ. He runs the popular blog site: OptimumSportsPerformance, and is also co-host of the Reality Based Fitness Podcast.

Patrick has been working in the field of strength and conditioning field for over 8 years. He is also a licensed massage therapist in the State of Arizona, specializing in clinical, therapeutic, orthopedic and sports massage. He is certified in Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT), Active Release Techniques (ART) for the Upper Extremity and Functional Movement Screen (FMS).

His professional experience working with a diverse clientele includes training and massage therapy for optimal health, injury or post-surgery rehabilitation, injury prevention and optimal athletic performance. He has served as a strength and conditioning consultant for various athletes of all ages and status. Prior to starting Optimum Sports Performance, Patrick was a top-level fitness and human performance coach in New York City, where he also presented seminars and clinics for other fitness professionals.

Patrick hold a Masters Degree in Exercise Science, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Instructor, Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist through National Academy of Sports Medicine, and a USA Weightlifting-Certified Coach.

Interview #6: Feb. 21st - Kyle Kiesel will be talking about the motor control research that is the foundation of Functional Movement Systems, how pain alters motor control and how that guides treatment, the benefits of diagnostic ultrasound and how this has influenced his approach to the 'core', and other treatment ideas for low back pain.

Dr. Kyle Kiesel PT, PhD, ATC, CSCS

Dr. Kiesel is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Evansville. His areas of research include motor control of the core and functional movement testing. Using ultrasound imagining and EMG, he has investigated how pain adversely affects motor control of the core and developed specific muscle tests used for patients with low back pain.

Because of his long-standing interest in athletic performance, injury prediction and recovery, his research has also led to significant work related to functional movement screening, testing and assessment for athletes. He is currently a co-investigator on a 1.5 million dollar grant to study functional movement risk factors related to injury in US military personnel. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents his work nationally and internationally as well as reviewing manuscripts for a variety of journals.

He serves as a consultant for professional and college sports teams where he assists with functional movement testing and training and with the prevention and treatment of athletic low back pain. He has extensive experience teaching lecture and lab courses emphasizing core training and functional movement assessment and intervention including both the FMS and the SFMA. He contributed his expertise related to the SFMA, FMS research, and the adverse affects of pain on motor control to the new book, "Movement". Dr. Kiesel is engaged in patient care in orthopedics and sports at ProRehab PC in Evansville, Indiana where he serves as Director of Evidence-Based Practice.

Interview #7: Feb. 28th - Greg Rose is an incredible clinician and golf biomechanist. He will be speaking about the new 4x4 corrective exercise matrix as part of SFMA, applications to the TPI screen and FMS, and the importance of neurodevelopmental progressions for corrective exercise. Greg will also discuss the interplay between asymmetry and motor control dysfunction.

Greg Rose is a board certified Doctor of Chiropractic and holds an undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of Maryland. Greg specializes in 3-D biomechanics, strength and conditioning, manual therapy, rehabilitation, nutritional supplementation and therapeutic exercises as they relate to golf.

Over the past twelve years he has helped thousands of golfers, at all different skill levels, reach their peak performance through physical conditioning and nutritional support. His unique form of functional training combined with golf-specific motor learning drills has made him one of the top strength and conditioning coaches for golf in the United States.

Greg is the co-host of the Golf Fitness Academy seen weekly on the Golf Channel and a co-founder of the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California. Greg is also a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner and a Fellow in the International Academy of Clinical Acupuncture.

His seminar series: 'The Body Swing Connection', has made him one of the most requested speakers in the field of golf biomechanics and video swing analysis for isolating physical limitations. Greg has lectured all over the world and has been featured in many golf and news publications.

Utilizing his background in engineering combined with his expertise on the human body, Greg has helped pioneer the field of analyzing computerized 3-Dimensional motion capture models of the golf swing. This research has helped golf professionals all over the world get a better understanding of how the body works during the golf swing.

Dr. Michael M. Reinold, PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS

Mike is considered a leader in the field of sports medicine and orthopedic rehabilitation. As a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and certified strength and conditioning specialist, Michael specializes in all aspects of care of shoulder, elbow, and knee disorders. He has worked extensively with a variety of professional athletes with emphasis on the care of throwing injuries in baseball players. In addition to his clinical work, he has made significant academic contributions in the form of laboratory research, biomechanical research, and clinical outcome studies.

Michael is currently the Assistant Director of Medical Services & Head Athletic Trainer of the 2007 WORLD SERIES CHAMPION Boston Red Sox Baseball Club. He is also the Coordinator of Rehabilitation Research and Education of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine Division, of Massachusetts General Hospital at the MGH Sports Center in Boston, MA. In addition, Michael is Adjunct Faculty at Northeastern University in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Michael was formerly the Facility Director of Champion Sports Medicine and the Coordinator of Rehabilitative Research & Clinical Education at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL.

Interview #9: March 14 - Dr. Craig Liebenson goes through the history of the Functional Assessment from Janda through today, what the research says about our need for this type of assessment technique, and how it should help to guide our treatment. Craig also reviews some of his techniques for improving thoracic spine mobility to create greater cervical and lumbar stability.

Dr. Craig Liebenson DC

Dr. Craig Liebenson received his Bachelors degree from the University of Colorado and chiropractic degree from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Chiropractic, Division of Health Sciences at Murdoch University and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Pain Society. The first ever chiropractic member of the McKenzie Institute (U.S.) Board of Directors he has been a frequent lecturer at national and international multidisciplinary meetings. Dr. Liebenson has published extensively in numerous journals and books on the subjects of rehabilitation and chronic pain.

He currently is in private practice in Los Angeles, at L.A. Sports and Spine, where he specializes in acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain including sports medicine and post-operative rehabilitation. He is the author of patient education books on both the neck and low back and editor of the multidisciplinary text Rehabilitation of the Spine: A Practitioner's Manual and the videotape series Rehabilitation of the Spine.

Interview #10: March 21st - Eric Cressey is one of the best strength coaches in the country. Eric will discuss his thoughts on the Postural Restoration Institute, and specifically the course on impingement and instability and how that relates to the hip and shoulder. Eric will also talk about some of his training philosophy, specifically power development for baseball, new thoughts on healthy shoulder training, and 'Functional Stability Training'.

Eric Cressey MA, CSCS

Eric Cressey is president and co-founder of Cressey Performance, a facility located just west of Boston, MA.
