Exercise of the Week - Knee Extension RNT series

Joe Heiler PT, CSCS

RNT techniques have been great for addressing femoral internal rotation/knee valgus during corrective exercises so I've been working on other applications for the techniques. In this example, the patient is 2 weeks post-op R ACL reconstruction and struggling to maintain knee extension in FWB. Using a theraband around the knee pulling him into flexion, I'm cuing the patient to fight the band while he goes through a series of movements with increasing challenges to balance and weight bearing.

We've all seen this patient: they work hard to regain terminal knee extension but are unable to control the knee in weight bearing. All the cuing in the world may not correct the situation in a timely manner, but I've been finding that using a band to pull into the mistake has been speeding the process of regaining control.

I've also gone from the opposite direction and pulled into hyperextension with those patients that rely on bony approximation for support. Same series of exercises, same great results.
