Exercise of the Week - the Running Man

Joe Heiler PT, CSCS

I was re-watching Craig Liebenson's Functional Performance Training DVD last night, and wanted to use one of the exercises from that as the 'Exercise of the Week'. The DVD is packed with great ideas grooving and training the major patterns of the squat, lunge, functional reaches, pushing/pulling, rotary training, and more. Over the next few weeks I'll highlight some of those exercises that maybe you haven't seen previously.

The Running Man

  • This is a dynamic stability drill so the patient or athlete should demonstrate competence with single leg static stance and the single leg reach/deadlift movement.

  • I'll often add a RNT valgus component to the movement if necessary.

  • Minimal knee bend on the stance leg. If they are unable to control that, use a RNT technique with a band around the knee pulling them into flexion. The patient/athlete must resist that.

Check out Dr. Liebenson's Functional Performance Training DVD HERE. He also released 2 other DVD's Core Stability Training and Flexibility, Yoga Training, and Ergonomic Postural Advice. I'll be talking more about those soon.
