Return to Sport Conditioning
When considering return to play programs for athletes I personally feel that many times the conditioning aspect is forgotten about completely. For those who do consider conditioning it consists of biking, running, or circuit training (which may or may not be similar to the sports energy system).
Another important aspect to consider is conditioning that is sport specific. We can create circuits of exercises that are programmed in a fashion that trains the desired energy system. However, sport specificity is done by playing or practicing the actual sport (not in the weight room).
Introduction back into playing the sport after injury can include drills which are specific to the sport and programmed in a manor that trains the specific energy systems utilized during sport.
Below is an example of this principal being applied as it relates to basketball.
The first drill in the video below combines common sport movements done in a fashion which trains both the alactic and aerobic system. A quick sudden burst of explosiveness followed by continues slow movement and a little rest.
The second drill combines the skill of shooting with aerobic conditioning.
I discuss more about these concepts in my book "The Sports Rehab Expert Method". Grab your copy of the book here on Amazon.
