  1. The Concept of Lowest System Load
The Concept of Lowest System Load

Effort does not equal results. We know this. And Newton's 2nd law says force is force is proportional to the mass of an object along with the acceleration of motion. In theory, there has to be more mass of the kettlebell to increase more force. But there can also be more acceleration....keep reading

  1. Webinar: Neuro - Functional Electro - Acupuncture
    Webinar&##x3a; Neuro - Functional Electro - Acupuncture

    Mahmoud Zaerian DC, CSCS
Over the last decade, acupuncture has become the most popular of the complementary medicine modalities and therapeutic approaches in the treatment of injuries and improvement of performance. One approach to acupuncture that has separated itself from the others in its effectiveness and efficiency is the Neuro - Functional Electro-acupuncuture approach to care. This approach consists of a multi-dimensional functional assessment and the use of electro-acupuncture in treating the multiple dimensions that are involved in the manifestation in loss of performance and injury....keep reading

  1. SportsRehabExpert.com Exercise of the Week - Tall Kneeling Pull Through

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
The 'pull through' was an exercise that was popular 5-6 years ago, and as far as I know Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson were the guys that either came up with it, or were at least talking a lot about it. I still use it from time to time when folks struggle with the loaded deadlift for some reason or they just don't have a way to load it at home. Where I feel like I get the most bang for the buck with type of movement though is in the tall kneeling position.....keep reading

  1. Webinar - Concussion Up-Date: Current Diagnosis & Management for Clinicians
Webinar - Concussion Up-Date&##x3a; Current Diagnosis & Management for Clinicians

    Michael Gay PhD, ATC
Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is considered by some in field of neurology to be a "silent epidemic". Although much has been accomplished in the fields of research, diagnosis, education and public awareness there is still a long road ahead of us. The focus of this presentation is to up-date participants on current research in areas of injury pathophysiology, diagnosis through neuropsychological evaluation, advanced imaging techniques and alternative diagnostic platforms as well as a review of the clinical management of athletes recovering from concussion....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Hip Traction and Effects on the Straight Leg Raise + a Bonus Offer from Ann and Chris Frederick
Exercise of the Week - Hip Traction and Effects on the Straight Leg Raise &##x2b; a Bonus Offer from Ann and Chris Frederick

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
I shot this video as a follow up to the interview with Ann and Chris Frederick discussing Fascial Stretch Therapy. I've known for awhile that performing hip flexion mobilization will immediately improve one's active/passive straight leg raise. What I didn't have was easy was to teach my patients to apply traction pre-stretching at home. This week's 'exercise of the week' will show you a couple different methods to achieve hip traction as part of a HEP plus you'll see the difference it can make. ***Chris just sent over a couple free bonuses for SportsRehabExpert.com members so be sure to grab those here as well***...keep reading

  1. Hamstring's Utility In Recovery
    Hamstring&##x27;s Utility In Recovery

A question I was recently asked from a SRE member was: What's up with that cool hamstring exercise at the end of your programs? Would like to know what the purpose is, why you would program it, and any tips on coaching it?...keep reading

  1. Vertical Pressing In Scaption
    Vertical Pressing In Scaption

Many people advocate for vertical pressing in scaption. However, I think that many people forget about the rotational component at the shoulder which is involved in scaption....keep reading

  1. Research Review: Pelvic Positional Influence on FAI
Research Review&##x3a; Pelvic Positional Influence on FAI

We have a good assumption at much of the symptoms developed from FAI are a result of boney approximation of the femur as it sits in the acetabulum. Potentially this approximation or compression which occurs over an extended period of time is leading to pathoanatomical changes to occur within the hip socket....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Rowing Variations

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
I had a request to do an 'Exercise of the Week' feature on traditional theraband exercises but with some tweaks built in to make them more 'functional'. This will probably take a few segments to hit completely, but for this week I wanted to start with the standing rowing exercises. These have long been a PT staple, but I've always questioned their supposed effectiveness since there are lots of compensatory strategies that could be used for here......keep reading

TRX Suspension Training Bodyweight Exercise - Scientific Foundations and Practical Applications

Here is the paper from TRX discussing the research on unstable training methods for injury prevention and enhancing core stability, the military studies we mentioned in the interview, and more......keep reading

  1. Considerations in Athletic Performance Enhancement Training: Athlete Weight Room Preparation
Considerations in Athletic Performance Enhancement Training&##x3a; Athlete Weight Room Preparation

Robert A. Panariello MS, PT, ATC, CSCS
During my 30+ career as a Physical Therapist (PT), Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach, I have been involved in both the Sports Rehabilitation and Performance Enhancement Training of athletes and have had many valued experiences throughout my years of practice in these two related professions. When confronted with an athlete who presents with a pathology that occurred during the course of S&C or personal training participation, my observations of the athlete, the review of the athlete's injury and medical history, and my experiences in the sports rehabilitation of athletes, often reveals that the injury is not directly due to a specific exercise performance, but to one of two other training considerations....keep reading

  1. Painful Misinterpretation
    Painful Misinterpretation

After some thought, it got me thinking about how this illusion is so similar to treating people in pain. Pain is complex, our bodies are complex. It is not a math equation with one right or wrong answer. Many contributing factors lead to a painful response, as well as the resolution of pain....keep reading

  1. Postural Restoration - A New Tool for the Coaching Tool Box
Postural Restoration - A New Tool for the Coaching Tool Box

Julie Blandin just sent over this power point from the NSCA Coaches Conference featuring Ron Hruska and Mike Arthur, and also a link now to the interview. Great stuff including some interesting ideas on the squat, warm-ups/cool downs, and 10 'considerations' for the coaching toolbox. Big thanks to Julie for sending that over, and now I may have to hit her up to answer the questions that are sure to come....keep reading

  1. Audio Interview with Tim Vagen
    Audio Interview with Tim Vagen

Tim discusses the typical swimmer's build and the asymmetries that go along with that, how the hips and shoulder are so closely related, and how he addresses that plus the core in his training. Tim's swimmers have almost no cases of shoulder pain in a sport where it's usually not a question of 'if they will have shoulder pain' but 'when'. Great stuff from Tim as always....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Banded Hip Thrust
Exercise of the Week - Banded Hip Thrust

    Andy Barker PT
A simple twist on a common hip dominant exercise used within a gym setting. The obvious difference is that the exercise uses a band and not a dumbbell or barbell. The major advantage of this is that once in position the hands are free to move. I find this really useful for athletes that struggle to keep the ribcage down during such movements i.e. lordotic types....keep reading

  1. Maximizing High Quality Reps with High Velocity Potentiation Clusters
Maximizing High Quality Reps with High Velocity Potentiation Clusters

    Cal Dietz and Dennis Adsit
Off-season, pre-season, or in-season Strength Coaches are always looking to maximize the number of high quality reps they can get in the weight room from their athletes. A high quality rep is one done at maximum speed and maximum power. The problem is that speed and power drop off quickly after two to three reps and then recovery is needed. If you read Triphasic Training: A Systematic Approach to Elite Speed and Explosive Strength Performance book, you know I am a big fan of Contrast training in general and the French Contrast method in particular. The French Contrast is a fancy name for a combination of complex and contrast methods....keep reading

  1. Core strength: A new model for injury prediction and prevention

Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology
a.k.a. the Fire Fighter Study - business development has been a topic of conversation lately, especially how to get one's name out there to build a patient/client base. Fire fighters and police are two groups to go to with the outcomes from this study, and a plan in place to replicate it with their departments. The researchers basically broke down injury rates and lost hours from the previous year, screened each fire fighter using the Functional Movement Screen, implemented the corrective programs, and then analyzed injury rates the following year. Needless to say there was a dramatic reduction so great information to have in your arsenal. When it comes to saving money and keeping people on the job, they will listen....keep reading
