- Isolation Stretching
Kevin Neeld CSCS To stretch or not to stretch...Why is this still a question? There is more than enough research showing that stretching before activity decreases performance measures (strength, power, speed, balance, etc.). Compared to a static stretching warm-up, a dynamic warm-up lead to significantly greater increases in these same measures. The misinterpretation of this research has lead to the idea that static stretching is completely unnecessary....keep reading
- Video Case Study - Multi-Segmental Extension Breakout and Treatment

Joe Heiler PT This was kind of a spur of the moment thing as we were doing an inservice on the MS Extension breakout, and decided it might be worthwhile to just turn it into a video for the site. Hopefully this will be a good learning tool and I can do more of these (and more thoroughly) in the future....keep reading

- Audio Commentary -When to Refer
Joe Heiler PT Sometimes knowing when to refer a patient back to the physician or for further testing can be tricky. In this month's audio commentary I go through a few examples using the SFMA model where I came to a road block with no way through. Even though you can be working through non-painful patterns sometimes you will encounter pain when restoring mobility......keep reading

- Four Reasons to Push Press

Robert A. Panariello MS, PT, ATC, CSCS For decades one of the popular upper body exercises to perform in the weight room has been the bench press exercise. One common question many high school athletes or any athlete may ask their peer is "How much can you bench"? With regard to upper body strength and power when was the last time any Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Professional has witnessed one athlete ask another "How much can you push press"? This inquiry does not usually occur because the push press exercise is not likely performed....keep reading
- Practical Application of Pre-Season Preparation and Conditioning for the Middle Aged to Senior Golfer

John D'Amico TPI-CGFI MP3 MSPT, M Ed, ATC As we enter middle age there are both short term and long term considerations that the older client and their team need to take into consideration when preparing for the golf season ahead. As this past harsher than usual winter, across this countries northern tier melts into spring, men and women's fancy turns once again to the migrant return of birdies, eagles and dare I say the rare albatross sighting. However 6 months of being semi shut in is not conducive to a rotary activity such as golf. This webinar will highlight the needs of the aging golfer and provide practical conditioning information that will help your clients get back on "course" this season....keep reading
- The 3 R's

This is a recent article written by Gray Cook, and I thought it would be great timing as I'm going back through the different patterns of the SFMA and updating the corrective exercises. I think we often get hung up on the correctives (the reload) as that is often the fun part of rehab, but we can't forget the importance of 'reset' and 'reinforce'......keep reading

- Plyometrics for the Joint Compromised Athlete

Andy Barker I wrote a post recently up on the SportsRehabExpert forum regarding what people's views were on plyometrics for joint compromised athletes. Had some great replies and in turn thought I would write an article on the subject. Plyometric exercise is a great training tool to develop explosive strength and power and in turn is used extensively within sports in which explosive strength and power are necessary. However, using such training methods does bring its potential problems. In particular, plyometrics are very difficult to program for those athletes considered 'joint compromised.'...keep reading

- Interval Training -HIIT or Miss?
We haven't heard from Mike lately so I figured it was time to get something up. Most of us have heard Mike talk about the value of interval training, and in this article he does a great job of making his argument for HIIT plus gives some real world parameters. This is the training method I use and whenever possible try to relay this type of information to other athletes and coaches. But what I don't think I've done enough of is to put this knowledge into practice on the clinic side of things. Injury rates go up with the level of fatigue so when we're working on getting someone back to athletics after being out 6 weeks, 6 months, whatever it may be, maybe we clinicians need to be incorporating more of this into our programs going forward....keep reading
