- 5 Ways to Get Your Athletes to Buy In

Andy Barker PT Whatever domain you work in gaining trust and having people believe in what you are telling them is imperative. Trust and 'buy in' is necessary to build relationships between you as a practitioner and an athlete. Without this progression, rehab and treatment can prove difficult and as a result potentially unsuccessful. I have highlighted five ways in which I have found to have improved this process and help to ensure we are getting as much out of an athlete's rehab and training program as possible....keep reading

- Strength?

Gray Cook Looking back over the Essentials of Coaching and Training Functional Continuums DVD I did with Dan John and Lee Burton, I realized how often we mentioned strength. This could potentially be the most polarizing topic that I've ever approached, only because I feel that many will think I'm saying strength isn't important. I'm not. I'm saying that the word strength does not have the level of communication and accountability that it should....keep reading

This article will outline some common pitfalls with using pre training markers and clear some misconceptions of what pre training markers really are. This article, as is the goal of The ProSport Academy is to provide practical advice and training underpinned and combined by interpretation of the current literature. The ART Of Working Successfully In The Sporting Environment…...keep reading
- Physical Education: Why Do We Make Kids Move?

Great article from Gray Cook on the state of physical education in this country. Definitely one of my pet peeves. In addition there are some great take home messages we could all apply to our professions plus he's got some interesting videos from Dr. Ed Thomas and the work he is doing in Jefferson Co. Iowa. Enjoy the article and part II will be coming next week....keep reading
- Warm-Up and Motor Concepts

Charlie Weingroff DPT, ATC, CSCS Something I find interesting is the rationalization of using "correctives" in a program is by placing them in the Warmup. My train of thought at this time suggests this positioning as a mistake and both detracts from the Warmup and the goal or intent of these drills to begin with. By default, choosing drills that are best positioned as motor skill acquisition for fundamental skills, such as mobility and stability, are really just being mailed in not delivering on the adjustments or adaptations that they are ideally used for in the first place....keep reading
- Audio Interview with Joe Heiler by Todd Nief at South Loop Strength and Conditioning

Todd Nief As a strength & conditioning coach, I've received some of the best continuing education by playing around in areas that I don't belong in. Courses geared more towards physical therapists like DNS, the SFMA, and Sahrmann's courses on Movement System Impairment Syndromes have profoundly impacted how I look at coaching and movement....keep reading
- It's All About Motor Control

Gray Cook A key component of motor control is muscle tone, and I want to specifically discuss inappropriate muscle tone. Very often, from the perspectives of physical therapy and rehabilitation, we don't necessarily see just tightness or weakness. Tightness is often a way that the body uses parking brakes in the absence of real, authentic braking systems. The braking system that the body has is called motor control and it is finely tuned to input, processing and appropriate output. When a fault is present somewhere in that system--somewhere in movement, somewhere in that coordination, timing and symmetry--a dysfunction is observable....keep reading

- NSCA Weight Lifting Norms - Download

In his teleseminar interview this year, Rob Panariello referred to weight lifting norms from the National Strength and Conditioning Association for high school and collegiate football players. When it comes to return to sport testing post-ACL reconstruction, instead of just comparing surgical limb to non-surgical limb, we should also consider the strength and power of the competition. In this download, I've posted a few of the norms for high school and college football, men's basketball and baseball, as well as women's college basketball. I've had good success going to orthopedic surgeons in my area with this data which has allowed me to progress my athletes along more quickly in their strength and power training....keep reading

- Monitoring Training Load

Andy Barker PT The monitoring of training load is nothing new although it has seen major advances in recent times. Within elite sport such systems can be very complex and include loading data from both objective (e.g. Global Positioning Satellite; GPS data) and subjective (e.g. athlete wellbeing and body soreness scores) means. Such data is used to analyse completed session content, the physiological response to previous training and help guide future training planning. In this article I will talk through some of the main concepts surrounding monitoring training load and some of their current pitfalls....keep reading
- Winter Illness, Medication, and Athletic Enhancement Performance Training

Robert A. Panariello MS, PT, ATC, CSCS As the winter season approaches, so does the emergence of various illnesses (i.e. upper and lower respiratory infections) and other conditions that are associated with both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. When faced with this type of ailment, the individual will usually seek the care of their physician who may elect to prescribe an antibiotic as the treatment of care. An increasingly popular prescribed remedy is the Fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics which includes the medications Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and Levofloxacin (Levaquin). It appears the preference for these prescribed quinolones stems from their excellent gastrointestinal absorption, superior tissue penetration and broad spectrum activity....keep reading
