  1. Exercise of the Week - PRI Standing Posterior Hip Capsule Stretch

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
One of the interesting asymmetries I notice more often now working through the PRI courses is an increase in internal rotation on the Right and an increase in external rotation on the Left (checked seated). In this segment of the 'Exercise of the Week', I'm going to show you a great way to improve L hip internal rotation mobility, how to strengthen post-stretching, and when to incorporate this into your program or rehab....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Dr. McGill's Hip Airplane

The hip airplane has been promoted by Dr. McGill for quite a few years now as a way to develop athletic balance and stability through the core and hip. It's a great way to begin teaching stabilization through the stance leg while moving the upper body and pelvis, and to address single leg deadlift technique....keep reading

    Webinar - The 4x4 Matrix&##x3a; Your guide to addressing Stability&##x2f;Motor Control Dysfunction through progressive postures, loads, and  reflex activation. &##xa;

    Joe Heiler
The title pretty much says it all, and hopefully I can clear up some confusion on this topic as well as give you some ideas for treating patients and working with athletes....keep reading

  1. Postural Assessment Video

    Dr. Steve Hoffman
Sports Rehab Expert member Dr. Steve Hoffman posted this video in the discussion forum a couple weeks ago, and I wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to check it out. There have been a few questions pertaining to postural assessment in the forum in the past so I figured let's get Steve's take on it. He presents some great potential corrective strategies as well that have their basis in Yoga and I could see the Prague School influence in there as well....keep reading

  1. Case Report: Meralgia Paresthetica -- A Manual Physical Therapy Approach
Case Report&##x3a; Meralgia Paresthetica -- A Manual Physical Therapy Approach

Tamer Issa, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT
Entrapment syndrome of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), known as Meralgia Paresthetica (MP), is a possible cause of pain and paresthesia in the lateral thigh. It has been proposed that MP is not rare, but is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed for other conditions, such as lumbar radiculopathy. Medical treatment for chronic MP often includes prescription medications and injections. If medical management fails, surgical decompression of the LFCN is considered....keep reading

  1. Updated Multi-Segmental Extension Correctives

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
This is my current thought process/flow sheet when it comes to treatment options for the MS Extension pattern of the SFMA. You'll notice the mobility corrections are fairly vague as I think you can use any number of different techniques to address the areas listed. I've also updated the corrective exercises I would consider based on where they would fall in the neurodevelopemental sequence and 4x4 matrix rather than what I'm trying to 'fix'....keep reading

  1. Manual Technique of the Week - Tibial Internal Rotation Taping

    Joe Heiler
This taping technique can work magic when used at the right times, and lately I've been using somewhat of a cross between Gray's technique and Brian Mulligan's. I've been using the method Gray describes in his 'Functional Movement Taping' DVD for quite awhile with great results. My only complaint is the amount of time and tape it takes. Mulligan's technique uses a single strip of tape so obviously more efficient. So here is how I've been using it and my clinical decision making process.....keep reading

  1. Ribcage and Respiratory Mechanics
    Ribcage and Respiratory Mechanics

Respiration and breathing mechanics are all the rage this day and age in rehab. Everyone is talking about it, but few really understand the mechanics behind it. Having a better understanding of the biomechanics will better help us understand the physiology and how it ultimately impacts movement and pain....keep reading

  1. SRE Exercise of the Week - Prone Elbows Lumbar Extension/Rotation

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
I've brought this up a few times in different places on the site but have never really featured it as an exercise of the week as I don't use it that frequently. That being said there are some times when it comes in pretty handy though. This would be a motor control corrective strategy of the MS Extension and Rotation patterns, and specifically during the breakout when lumbar extension and rotation in prone is dysfunctional and non-painful actively but is functional and non-painful passively....keep reading

  1. Course Review - PRI's Pelvis Restoration Course
Course Review - PRI&##x27;s Pelvis Restoration Course

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
I recently took PRI's Pelvis Restoration course and wanted to take the time to review it. I would highly recommend this course although I did take the MyoKinematic course first and that seemed to be the best move as I had a much easier time wrapping my head around the femoral-acetabular mechanics in that course than I did the pelvic and sacral mechanics in this course. There is so much great (and in-depth) information in this course that it's hard to do a good review of it all. Hopefully I can present the basic concepts of the course without making it too complicated....keep reading

Manual Therapy Technique of the Week - First Rib Muscle Energy Techniques

    Jessica Paparella, DPT
Big thanks to Jessica for writing this article and also to Rob Panariello from Professional PT for helping to set this up. Definitely one to assess so check out the article from Jessica plus I added a video showing the techniques that she discusses....keep reading

  1. A Key Link in the Locomotor System: The Upper Thoracic Spine
A Key Link in the Locomotor System&##x3a; The Upper Thoracic Spine

Dr. Craig Liebenson and Dr. Brett Winchester
With chiropractic backgrounds rooted in motion palpation and functional rehabilitation, we have observed that the upper-thoracic spine may be the most commonly restricted area in the locomotor system. This restriction of multiple segments (C7-T5) is likely related to cervical disc herniations; degenerative changes at the lower cervical spine; shoulder impingement and rotator-cuff pathologies; and low back pain....keep reading

  1. Manual Therapy Technique of the Week - Treating the Infraspinatous and Teres Minor

    Joe Heiler PT
I've become much more familiar with trigger point referral patterns and treating these out the past couple years since taking the Kinetacore Functional Dry Needling course. One of the most common trigger points I end up dry needling and/or using Graston Technique to treat in the shoulder is the infraspinatous and teres minor. Active trigger points in these muscles can refer pain to the anterior and middle shoulder, and on occasion will also refer pain down the arm......keep reading
