  1. World Golf Summit Update - Active Release Technique and Trigger Point Dry Needling

Two things really blew me away at the World Golf Summit last week, and those were ART with Dr. Mike Leahy and Trigger Point Dry Needling with Edo Zylstra. Unfortunately we only had an hour with each so I took as many notes as possible, and made them both promise to come on for interviews in the near future. So here is what I picked up from each as well as a couple video demonstrations....keep reading

  1. The Ankle Syndosmosis Test
    The Ankle Syndosmosis Test

    Andy Barker PT
Below is a test I recently came across to test for ankle syndosmosis injury. Previously I had mainly used the following three tests: Squeeze test, Dorsiflexion/lateral rotation test (supine), and Lateral rotation test (seated). The aim of the test, as with the above tests, is to test the integrity of the syndosmosis. Although pain is the indicator in the test, the test itself is looking for instability, largely resulting from injury to the anterior inferior tibio-fibular ligament (AITFL) and/or posterior inferior tibio-fibular ligament (PITFL)....keep reading

  1. Key Functional Exercises You Should Know - Turkish Get Up
Key Functional Exercises You Should Know - Turkish Get Up

This review covers part III of Gray Cook's new DVD: Key Functional Exercises You Should Know. The majority of the DVD covers the Turkish Get Up which is what I will address here, but also covers the Q & A session at the end of Gray's presentation. I know Gray doesn't like to give an answer to the question 'if you could only use one exercise what would it be?', but when he has had to it has been the TGU. There are just so many great things going on with this exercise that I look for any excuse to work it in with my patients and athletes....keep reading

  1. Treatment Technique of the Week - Self Care Foot and Ankle Circuit
Treatment Technique of the Week - Self Care Foot and Ankle Circuit

    Andy Barker PT
I've recently taught a few athletes some self-care foot and ankle treatments. Whilst this sort of treatment would never replace practitioner led manual therapy it can act as a great addition to such therapy....keep reading

  1. Manual Technique of the Week - Patellar Distraction Taping

    Jessica Bott ATC, LMT
The patellar distraction taping is used to decrease patello-femoral pain and allow for more activity, especially quad strengthening. This taping can be used with any number of knee pain conditions including TKA to reduce compression. To know the taping technique is successful, you should see an immediate decrease (or elimination) of pain during the performance of a previously painful movement....keep reading

  1. Elite Physical Therapy Blog - Shoulder Rehab Part III
Elite Physical Therapy Blog - Shoulder Rehab Part III

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
In part I of this series I discussed how traditional physical therapy exercises for the rotator cuff often miss the mark, and then in part II how dysfunction and a lack of motor control in other areas of the body can significantly affect the shoulder and cause pain. Be sure to read those, if you haven't already, as this article will make much more sense. In part III I want to talk about another concept that has taken the therapy world by storm -- Scapular Retraction....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Toe Touch Patterning with Core Activation

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
This is one I picked up from Gray this past summer, and works extremely well with that patient that is pain free during the descent of the toe touch but painful trying to get back up. Using the pulley system, you take advantage of activating the core on the way down and have just enough assistance on the way back up to create a pain free flexion pattern corrective exercise....keep reading

  1. How Not To Warm-Up
    How Not To Warm-Up

    Nick Tumminello
I like to think of myself as the thinking man's coach. I'm always evaluating my own programs and what's currently being taught by other professionals in the hopes of finding better, more efficient ways of doing things. When it comes to my evaluation process, I use a very simple philosophy: "If it doesn't make scientific sense, and it defies common sense, then it must be nonsense."...keep reading

  1. Audio Commentary - Should We Teach Scapular Retraction?

    Joe Heiler PT
Description Early in my career scapular retraction was the way to go with all the articles on SICK scapular syndrome and a majority of the conferences I attended dealing with the shoulder. After some reflection on failed cases plus learning more about the SFMA, PRI, and DNS I've decided that maybe this isn't the best idea. In this audio commentary, I'll discuss why scapular retraction isn't the best option, and then how I assess and address scapular stability using these other systems as my guide....keep reading

  1. Finding Torque to Create a Stabile Low Back
Finding Torque to Create a Stabile Low Back

I've been planning on shooting a series of videos to address correcting that hyperextended lumbar posture that we see all too often. I stumbled across this video the other day from physical therapist and trainer Kelly Starrett from his MobilityWOD blog that demonstrates exactly what I want to discuss plus shows a great way to reduce the lordosis by creating torque through the hips. I'm still going to shoot some video attacking it through the 4x4 matrix, but for now check this out......keep reading

  1. Training = Rehab, Rehab = Training Seminar Review
Training &##x3d; Rehab, Rehab &##x3d; Training Seminar Review

Charlie Weingroff put on a great course this past weekend in Toronto, and I just wanted to post on a couple ideas that were somewhat new to me, or that we've discussed on here before but Charlie gave a much more thorough explanation. With his expertise in the DNS and FMS systems he certainly has a unique perspective. This by no means covers the entire course (you'll have to see for yourself), but I thought I'd hit the high points....keep reading

  1. Spider Tech Taping for Scapular Stability with Thoracic Rotation

    Chris Nentarz
We were at Charlie Weingroff's Training = Rehab, Rehab = Training seminar this weekend. In the middle of working with a group on shoulder and t-spine breakouts when Chris decided to tape one of the participants. Figured we could make a cool video out of it just to give you all some ideas for scapular stability....keep reading

  1. Clinical Pearl: Functional Management of Stenosis
Clinical Pearl&##x3a; Functional Management of Stenosis

    Nelson Min PT, MS, ATC
The SFMA is a powerful tool in evaluating movement quality. It is also extremely helpful in picking things up that aren't immediately obvious. A good history though is often just as important in figuring out what is wrong, especially when you aren't able to reproduce your patient's symptoms. I listen for several things when evaluating a new patient with low back pain. I take particular interest when my patient informs me that their pain increases with prolonged standing or walking versus pain that increases with prolonged sitting....keep reading

  1. Shoulder Solutions Part II
    Shoulder Solutions Part II

    Mike Robertson
In Part I of our Shoulder Solutions series, we discussed the fundamentals of proper shoulder training. In Part II, we're going to discuss some specific training mediums to get those shoulders feeling as good as possible! Let's start by examining the thoracic spine, first and foremost. Hopefully you committed this comment from the first article to memory.....keep reading

  1. Considerations in Athletic Performance Enhancement Training: The Overhead Press - Is Using a Bench Putting You on the Bench?
    Considerations in Athletic Performance Enhancement Training&##x3a;  The Overhead Press - Is Using a Bench Putting You on the Bench&##x3f;

Robert A. Panariello MS, PT, ATC, CSCS
There are various exercises available for selection to enhance an athlete's upper body strength and power qualities. Included in this accessible exercise selection are a number of specific overhead performance enhancement exercises, one being the overhead press. Often these overhead pressing type exercises are performed with the utilization of an exercise bench, and more explicitly, a bench with a backing....keep reading

  1. 6 Months After Sahrmann

    Charlie Weingroff DPT, ATC, CSCS
It has been around 6 months or so since I had the opportunity to see Dr. Shirley Sahrmann speak in central New Jersey. My excitement around that time led to my notes that I scribbled down during the 2 days of the seminar. Over these last several months, I've had the opportunity to further understand her principles and integrate some new thoughts and strategies into how we rehab and train individuals....keep reading
