  1. 4 Tips To Improve Your Plank and Back Pain
4 Tips To Improve Your Plank and Back Pain

Planks are presumably one of the most popular body weight abdominal exercises. Usually, the intention of the exercise is to promote abdominal strength while simultaneously reducing low back pain. However, the exercise often strays from its intended purpose due to improper form, lack of body awareness, and excessive hold time....keep reading

  1. Hip Stabilization Exercises
    Hip Stabilization Exercises

    Kevin Neeld
Over the last few years, I've written and talked quite a bit about preventing hip injuries in hockey players. Unfortunately, things like adductor and hip flexor strains have become accepted as "part of the game", and now we're seeing a surge of femoroacetabular impingement, labral tear, and sports hernia cases. The underlying mechanisms to many of these injuries can be pretty complex, but once you get it, many of these cases can be prevented....keep reading

  1. Manual Technique of the Week - Lateral Taping of the Achilles
Manual Technique of the Week - Lateral Taping of the Achilles

    Joe Heiler PT, CSCS
I recently purchased the 'Mulligan Taping Techniques' DVD and have to say it was well worth the money. We've discussed many of these techniques previously as they've applied to holding joint mobilizations, but in the DVD there are many techniques to reposition tendons to alleviate tendinopathy symptoms and even the muscle belly in certain instances for muscle strains. I'll be showing a few of those techniques in the coming weeks, and a few more I've come up with using the Mulligan principles but were not on the DVD. That's the great thing about the DVD in my mind, you can take his ideas and run with them when it comes to addressing the specific needs of each individual patient....keep reading

  1. Exercise of the Week - Squat Hold Kettlebell Press

Here is a great video from Mike Boyle showing a kettlebell press from a deep squat position. The exercise is from Dan John's Warm-up DVD which can be found at DaveDraper.com. It's a great anti-flexion exercise that you have to try. Your abdominals will give out before your shoulders ever will. And it's one more way to engage the core in the squat position so I'm going to be playing around with this one to improve the deep overhead squat. Lots of people can achieve a deep squat position unloaded, put them upright and not a prayer because of faulty muscle timing and/or poor stability through the core....keep reading

Preparation of the Athlete for the Running Gait Cycle During the Rehabilitation of the Post-Operative ACL Reconstructed Knee

Robert A. Panariello MS, PT, ATC, CSCS and Derek Hansen MASc, CSCS
Running and sprinting are integral components of successful sports participation. There are many situations during athletic competition where the fastest athlete will have a distinct advantage over his/her opponent. An athlete that sustains an ACL injury, resulting in ACL reconstructive surgery, must also participate in the essential post-operative knee rehabilitation that follows. This rehabilitation process includes a systematic progression of exercise application over time, to advance the athlete to the eventual return to the field of play. A vital component to this rehabilitation process is the return of the athlete to running and sprinting activities....keep reading
